Malva Solís was born in Chile in 1919. A transgender woman of Chilean nationality, she arrived in Argentina in 1943 and remained in the country until her death in 2015, at the age of 96. According to her own account, she crossed the Andes on foot in search of a better future. Her arrival in Argentina was shaped by experiences of persecution and stigma related to her gender identity. At the age of 17, shortly after arriving in Argentina, she was arrested and taken to Devoto Prison. During that period, another transgender woman gave her the name Malva, which she adopted as part of her identity. This episode was part of a life trajectory shaped by the forms of persecution and criminalization that historically affected transgender people. During the 1950s, she participated in Maricones Unidos Argentinos (MUA), an organization through which she became involved in community organizing and advocated for the right to identity.
