Carla María Pericles was born in Corrientes on February 1, 1953. She later settled in Tigre, where she developed part of her life trajectory as a travesti and became one of the first women to engage in sex work in the Panamericana area. Her life was marked by persecution and institutional violence: during Argentina’s last civic-military dictatorship, as well as under democracy, she was arrested on numerous occasions.
At the age of 37, in the face of persecution by a police commissioner who, according to her account, was seeking to kill her, Carla went into exile in Italy. She remained there for more than twenty years, during which time she built a new chapter in her life and met the person who would become the great love of her life.
After returning to Argentina, she went back to Tigre, a place with which she maintained a strong emotional connection. During her final years, she worked caring for older adults and also supported her mother. During this period, she became involved with the work of the Archivo de la Memoria Trans, contributing to the preservation of travesti and trans collective memory.
In 2019, Carla donated her entire collection of photographs to the Archivo de la Memoria Trans, adding an important record of her life trajectory and of an era marked by persecution, exclusion, and survival strategies among travesti people. This donation constitutes part of her contribution to the construction and preservation of collective memory.
Carla María Pericles died on June 21, 2020. Her life trajectory remains closely connected to Tigre, to the networks of affection she built throughout her life, and to the photographs she chose to share so that her story and those of her compañeras could be preserved.
