Perla Ámbar Gómez was born on November 20, 1969, in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires Province. She was the eldest of ten siblings and grew up in Alejandro Korn, where she attended primary school and part of secondary school. From an early age, she took on caregiving responsibilities within her family, particularly after her father stopped working and her mother became the household’s primary breadwinner. As an adult, she returned to her studies and completed secondary school in Berazategui, achieving a personal goal she had postponed for many years.
From childhood, Perla felt that her gender identity did not conform to the social expectations of the time. During adolescence, she went through a process of personal exploration shaped by experiences of discrimination related to her gender expression. Her encounters with travestis and trans women in her community became significant to the development of her identity, providing her with important references and a sense of belonging. At around the age of 24, she began hormone treatment and publicly affirmed her identity as Perla. During this period, she met Cuqui, a travesti friend who became an important person in her life and suggested the name Perla, inspired by the telenovela Perla Negra.
Her life unfolded within a context in which travesti and trans identities were criminalized. She experienced police harassment, arbitrary detention, and other forms of institutional violence associated with the enforcement of regulations that sanctioned gender expression. She also faced barriers to accessing housing, employment, and various public services, experiences that reflected the conditions of exclusion historically faced by Argentina’s travesti and trans communities.
Throughout her life, Perla built significant emotional bonds and friendships that provided spaces of care and belonging. These networks became especially important during periods of vulnerability, including a fire at her family home that destroyed her belongings and further intensified her economic difficulties. At that time, her friendships and the trans community became an essential source of support.
Following the legal recognition of gender identity and the expansion of rights-based policies, Perla became increasingly involved in community spaces and activism focused on the rights of trans people. She currently lives in the southern Greater Buenos Aires area and remains connected to community organizations, supporting initiatives related to employment inclusion, access to rights, and historical reparations. At the same time, she continues to seek new employment opportunities and maintains a life project centered on autonomy, caring for her animals, and supporting others, contributing through her experience to the creation of networks of solidarity and collective memory.
